Riding Mower

4/29/2019

It has been suggested that we purchase a riding greens mower. Since our greens are 120' x 120', do you think a riding unit would work? When I see them working on a golf course they drive on and then off to turn around. Do you know of any club that uses a riding mower?

Ken

Thank you Ken for using the greens keeper forum.

I don’t know of any greens in Ontario that are using that type of mower. The only one I have seen was at Pinehurst NC. When I discussed this with the greens keeper he said the biggest problem was getting into the corners. He still had to use the walk-behind mower to cut the corners.

I don’t know what the cost would be for a riding mower but In my estimation it is not worth the money to buy one.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions let me know (or post a comment).

Mowing Direction

Cutting of greens straight up and down does it do harm to the running of the greens(setting up ruts etc.) or should you always mow diagonally?

Thanks Jim F.

Hi Jim.
Thank you for your question. Mowing your green up and down the way you are bowling is not a good practice. Once in a while it does not matter, but if you cut them up and down all the time it will create not only ruts but also the grass will be laying down a certain way that will cause a friction. Most golf courses will use the clock system from 1 to 7, from 2 to 8 etc. to avoid mowing the same way all the time.

Most bowling greens are cut from corner to corner, alternating direction every time they cut. This way the grass doesn’t have a chance to grow a certain way. Cutting, rolling and verticutting should be done from corner to corner.

Hope this helps.
